Successful freezing of mr Moro

Successful freezing of mr Moro

As we get into the potential use of technology, my mind goes back to a story our litterature teacher had us read from: Successful freezing of mr Moro. There is an picture of a man being frozen in a block of ice:

Mr Moro successfully being frozen in cake of ice

Sometimes we must wonder at the purpose of experiments. Say that we could freeze people without turning their cells into smush when thawed, how would we use that technology? There is the medical science fiction story about freezing a person because the technology for a cure is not developed yet. Though, depending on the cost, you could use freezing as a way to have people serve extremely long prison sentences. Say that the cost of freezing is low enough, then you could have work shortage force workers to skip a few years of recession. A dark twist of that story would be if the skills you have and your age would make it unprofitable to ever thaw you out.

This is probably not realistic, but harmless freezing is a common enough trope. The impact of technology can not always be predicted in a neat way or fit into an existing story.

As we find a changed reality around us, we tell new stories and fairy tales, reflecting the mix of new and old.
